Landolt and Brown’s first education commission was to remodel Arnold House Preparatory School in St John’s Wood, London. The project links four existing buildings and will provide a new dining room, gymnasium and new classrooms within a heavily constrained Conservation Area site which includes a number of protected trees. Innovative environmental design will allow all of the teaching spaces to be naturally ventilated and predominantly daylit, although several of the rooms have no vertical windows due to neighbouring site restrictions.

Solum Regeneration, building on the success of the Epsom project, commissioned Landolt + Brown to design a new station building as part of its ambitious proposals to deliver a major new mixed-use scheme over the railway tracks in Twickenham Town Centre. The project involves construction of a new raft over the railway, a new and much enlarged concourseand vertical access elements linking to the platforms and upgrade of the platform buildings as the major local benefit associated with the development. Landolt + Brown’s knowledge of the engineering issues associated with building around and above an operating railway has enabled the technical approvals for the project to run in parallel with public consultation and planning applications. The project is due to go to planning committee in May 2011 with a start anticipated by mid-summer this year.

Solum Regeneration, a joint venture between Kier Property and Network Rail, appointed Landolt + Brown to develop design proposals for a new station as part of a major mixed-use development project on a former station and car park site in Epsom Town Centre. The new station will provide a new concourse, staff and passenger facilities linking to the existing but upgraded subway and stair and lift connections to the rail platforms. The design quality and enhanced environment created by the new station has been seen as the major local community benefit of this mixed use development and therefore played a key role in securing detailed planning consent. The project is currently on site and due for completion in 2012. Landolt + Brown’s detailed technical understanding of rail-related construction has enabled the project to progress through rail approvals processes rapidly and with the minimum of risk.

Network Rail appointed Landolt + Brown in 2009 to test the viability of constructing a new station on the Thameslink line at West Hampstead. The only available site was located on a steeply sloping embankment to the south of the railway, which included a continuous avenue of protected lime trees set behind 2m high palisade fencing. Landolt + Brown worked closely with the local community and Camden to develop the design of an elegant, steel framed station building set at the end of a new 100m long public space, created by leveling the former embankment. This new space has allowed the previously inaccessible group of trees to form a generous boulevard, acting as the main approach to the station. The colour and texture of the glazed brickwork face of the retaining wall reflects the varying hues in the canopy of the lime trees above, with the colours graduating from dark to light to aide way-finding and orientation. The paving of the new space is fully permeable and incorporates a sophisticated build-up of lightweight aggregates and protection membranes to ensure the health of the lime trees in the years to come. Construction methods were also selected to minimise impact on both the trees and the operating railway throughout the construction period. Landolt + Brown was awarded Network Rail’s Partnership Award for its work with the local community during the planning consultation stage in 2010 and the project was completed within budget and on programme, in December 2011.

Transport for London has engaged Landolt + Brown to design an expanded rail and bus interchange, establish potential for line-side residential and commercial development and to carry out detailed design of the first phase of highway and public realm improvements. Initially the practice was engaged to develop proposals for expansion of the railway facilities, combined with the design of an oversite development incorporating 200 new residential units and 3,000msq of retail space. The first phase to deliver a new bus interchange and a major new public square is fully funded and due for construction in the fourth quarter of 2013. In 2009, Landolt + Brown was commissioned by the LDA to prepare an Urban Centre Masterplan for a 12 hectare site to the north of the Hale and in 2010 the practice was asked to develop detailed designs for a new pedestrian and cycle link over the railways for Design for London.
