Following on from development feasibility work carried out for Transport for London’s property team, Landolt + Brown designed 8 townhouses and 4 retail units for a private developer on two small and highly constrained, tapering sites adjacent to, and beneath, the Overground viaduct crossing Brick Lane.

Constructed immediately adjacent to the Overground viaduct and with the Great Eastern Lines running directly below the site, a highly innovative approach to housing typology was needed to resolve the environmental impacts of the rail infrastructure, to allow for maintenance access to the railway structures and to create housing and commercial space of high quality that was in keeping with the dense, historic character of the Brick Lane Conservation Area.

The project was completed in 2012. Landolt + Brown developed the concept design for the scheme and obtained detailed planning consent, after which it was taken forwards by a design + build contractor.
