Landolt + Brown have been commissioned by Solum Regeneration, a partnership between Network Rail and Kier Property, to design and deliver several rail enhancement projects as part of larger-scale development of former railway parking land. These commissions include Twickenham Station which is nearing completion and Epsom Station, illustrated here, which was completed in 2012.

The project involved a highly complex delivery strategy with the new station being developed on the footprint of the existing railway entrance which had to remain in operation for the full duration of the construction programme. It therefore involved a highly choreographed sequencing method to retain full access for passengers throughout the build sequence. The project incorporates an entirely new booking hall and refurbishment of exciting subways and platform stair connections. The concourse was designed to work effectively as a well-used commuter station but also to respond to major events held at Epsom’s famous race course.

The main creative challenge was to respond to the transition in spatial volume from the double-height entrance to the low subway environment in the passenger tunnel beneath the tracks. Landolt + Brown incorporated coloured, back-lit glass louvres above the entrance to ‘lead’ passengers into the underpass, with green hues that graduate in tone, becoming paler as ceiling heights reduce to enhance the sense of brightness within the subway.
