Peckham Rye Station Enhancement

The existing Peckham Rye station, which is Grade II listed, is the busiest interchange on the national network without step-free access and has seen significant growth in the past decade relating to new London Overground and Thameslink services as well as Peckham’s growing focus as a leisure and creative industry destination. The proposal will enhance the existing station, improve access, and work in tandem with the practice’s design for Southwark’s new public square in front of station, with anticipated start on site in early 2023.

The main element of the project will be the formation of a new concourse extension to the rear of the main building, creating a new, voluminous space in Dovedale Court, a narrow parcel of land flanked by brick arched viaducts on either side. The new concourse will provide three new platform stair connections to ease circulation and remove congestion points, allow the existing building to be remodelled to accommodate lifts to all platforms, and utilises the viaduct arches to house a range of passenger facilities, a secure cycle hub, and retail as key components within the station. Detailed planning and listed building consent was submitted in March 2022.

The creative narrative for the design which has been developed in collaboration with artist Wendy Hardie, relates to the historic use of the land for steel fabrication and the artistic heritage of the area with artists William Blake, John Latham, Sir Anthony Gormley and the arts organisation Bold Tendencies all influencing aspects of the design.
